You will regret if you add tap water into your AdBlue tank!

Some of these comments may sound familiar to you, but they are far from the truth :

“Tap water and AdBlue look the same to me”

AdBlue contain water but it’s de-ionized water, it’s not water that someone can buy off the rack. Tap water contains a lot of minerals and ions that is extremely harmful to the vehicle exhaust treatment system. From our encounter, a driver poured 2 litres of tap water into the AdBlue tank; 2 weeks later, the horse power is greatly reduced and it was in the workshop on 4th week.

It doesn’t pay to add Tap Water to AdBlue.

“AdBlue is mostly water, by adding more water it’s cheaper to operate the vehicle”

AdBlue is 67.5% de-ionized water, without any minerals / ions. Tap water contains lots of mineral and ions. Essentially de-ionized water and tap water are different and tap water should not be added into AdBlue tank.

When tap water is in the AdBlue tank, the minerals and ions will be dozed into the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust treatment system. These minerals and ions will react with the converters and choke them up.

This is the sequence of events that will happen if the AdBlue SCR System is choked up by Tap Water:

The AdBlue SCR System will not be able to doze AdBlue into the system, this will show up on dashboard
The AdBlue system will send a signal to Engine Control Unit (ECU) to reduce the horsepower, because the vehicle is no longer able to reduce the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) effectively
Your vehicle down at the vehicle dealer workshop for minimum 3 – 4 days (if they have the parts in Singapore). There goes your tool for earning money
If they discovered that you added Tap Water into the AdBlue Tank, you will have to pay the full cost of repair that can range from SGD 6,000 to SGD 13,000.

Remember, it does not pay to add tap water into AdBlue tank!
